 [Bing-bang bing-bong, the school bell rang.

 

Classes had ended, and with them dozens of students had left the school, either to go home or shopping. The only ones remaining were either those with extracurricular activities such as clubs and committees or were just studyholics.

 

Personally, Saori was glad to be on health committee. The work may have been hard, especially with the rumors that spread about nurse Edogawa had (she lost count of how many times she had to tell students she wasn't allowed to give out medicine.), and she still couldn't fit in with the other students. But even so, she would rather be here than at home. At least here she mattered somewhat, instead of being a mere obligation.

 

In fact, thinking back on it that may have been why she joined. The duty of a committee is to help people, both the school faculty and the students. Another thing, a committee can't run on just one person alone. To make it work it needed to be a team, to work together. For someone like her, it was a catch. Granted, the latter part still wasn't working out as planned. Too often she was still stuck with most of the duties. Not that it was the other committee members' fault! They were just always busy. At least Minako was nice. Sometimes she was busy too and couldn't come, but whenever she did she always did her duties with a smile. Not just that, she did them together with her, chatting with her, laughing with her. When Minako came, somehow Saori felt the day would be better.

 

Is this what it means to be friends? Saori didn't know for sure. But today was a committee meeting day. Saori hoped she would come.]

Come she does... albeit about five minutes late, and extremely out of breath. She claps her hands in an apology when she barges through the door.

"Sorry I'm late, Saori-chan! Odagiri-kun caught me in the hall with some student council business." Minako thrived on being active, but occasionally her many responsibilities after-school ended up conflicting one another.

Instantly, a true smile flashes on her face. Saori was used to smiling, but this one didn't feel forced.

"Oh, don't worry about it. You have a more complicated schedule than I do. Anyway, I'm glad you came." To be honest, Minako seemed the type to join every club in school. She had the energy.

"Well, it's my job." Even if she can't be to every meeting, she still has to do her part, or she couldn't really call herself a club member, could she? "And the boxing club is practicing today so I'm sure Akihiko-senpai will wind up sending someone here by accident sooner or later. I couldn't skip out and let you deal with that alone."

"Oh dear. Then we should go get the extra supplies in the storage." Saori may not be that social, but she does listen in on stories. Everyone knows about the legendary box champion Akihiko-senpai, the one who has never lost a match. With how many boxers the office gets, she's inclined to believe it.

Something else is surprising about Minako's statement though. "Are you a fan of Sanada-sempai too?"

"Huh...?" For a moment, she's confused, until she realizes what Saori must be assuming. "No, nothing like that! ...He's a friend, actually. We live in the same dorm so we end up running into each other a lot."

And fight together. But she unfortunately can't share that with Saori.

A friend? Minako, you have no idea how many of her classmates would kill just to be in your position.

"You're a lucky one. I've overheard from my classmates that he's hard to approach."

...She laughs, while continuing to unpack the equipment. "To be honest, I feel a little bad for anyone who is in his fan club. He really has no clue how to handle girls. A few of them tried to chat him up outside the beef bowl shop the other day, and he thought they were just there to order food. He had no idea why they were angry when he ignored them."

Wow. That was worse than Saori was expecting.

"Really? That's a bit..." Single-minded? Clueless? How do you politely describe someone who's denser than a rock? "But it sounds like you don't have that problem. Then again, you live in the same dorm. That's already a large advantage." It means they can meet and talk together even after school, and she gets to see him in his home environment. Hah, maybe it's a good thing the other members couldn't make it.

"Yes, if you look at it that way. It's nice having a small dorm instead of a big one. You get to know everyone." Even if her dormmates weren't all members of SEES, it would be a fun place to live. It feels like a home. She's been in dormitories before that were crowded and required roommates. Having her own space is a good change.

Get to know everyone huh. "Hmm. Then maybe I should join. I can convince my parents." She laughs. Sadly she's only half-joking. If she brought that up seriously with her parents, then they might jump at the chance. Saori isn't really sure if she wants to risk disgracing her family again, even if Minako did make the prospect of living at the dorms fun.

Inwardly, Minako knows that can't happen. But, she can't bring herself to bluntly discourage Saori's idle idea. "I don't know if there's more spaces... But it would be nice if you were there with us." It's just not possible.
